Latest Obsession: Cry Baby by Melanie Martinez
Melanie Martinez has come a long way since her days on season three of the popular reality singing competition The Voice. Since The Voice, she has signed to Atlantic Records, released an EP titled Dollhouse, and followed up with the full-length album Cry Baby which was released on August 14th.
Since Melanie dropped Cry Baby I haven’t been able to stop listening. With the help of the songwriting/ production duo Kinetics & One Love, Melanie was able to create an album that turns infantile things into something far more mature. The album is full of songs that are equal parts catchy, and haunting. It combats the “positive vibes only” mentality, which I love. It's not that I don't think we shouldn't try to remain positive, I just think we shouldn't pretend to be happy when we aren't. Songs like "Pity Party", "Pacify Her" and "Cry Baby", explore all the negative emotions that people experience but would rather ignore.
If you're not one to act like the world is always sunshine and rainbows, I would definitely recommend this album. Once you start listening, it will be impossible to not replay it a million times.
