Someone PLEASE Save Bonnie Bennett!
We all have that one friend who becomes emotionally invested in television shows and I’m not ashamed to say that I’m that friend. Last year I decided to watch The Vampire Diaries, which was in its 5th season at the time, and I became obsessed. I caught up just in time to finish the season, thanks to Netflix and Sherri J.
The Vampire Diaries (TVD), is set in the fictional town of Mystic Falls, Virginia and follows Elena Gilbert as she falls in love with brothers Stefan and Damon Salvatore, both of whom happen to be vampires. While I do enjoy watching the trio (mostly the extremely sexy Salvatore brothers), this post isn’t about them. One of my favorite characters is TVD’s on and off again witch Ms. Bonnie Bennett, played by actress/singer Kat Graham.
Bonnie comes from a long line of powerful witches but wasn’t aware of her lineage and powers until high school. Since discovering her powers she has helped her friends even if meant that she would lose her life in the process- she is basically that ride or die friend that gets screwed over every time she decides to help. Within the show’s six seasons Bonnie has fainted, died, been brought back to life only to get stuck in 1994 (I know that sounds crazy, but the show is called The Vampire Diaries) in order to save her friends.
When it comes to Bonnie, shit always hits the fan and the only person that seems to care is Jeremy, her boyfriend who’s also Elena’s little brother. Elena, her so-called best friend, is usually too preoccupied with her love triangle or somewhere in danger requiring assistance. In fact, nine times out of ten, if Bonnie’s life was hanging in the balance, she was trying to help Elena’s ungrateful ass in one-way or another (yes, I know I’m in my feelings).
After Bonnie sacrificed herself for Damon, so he could escape his “personal hell” and be with Elena, I lost all hope. It wasn’t until episode 6×10, rightfully titled “I alone” that I finally became optimistic; there was finally an attempt to rescue Bonnie. However, it was a huge fail. After the shit show of a rescue, Damon said to Elena ” She sacrificed everything for us, over and over again. And then we were supposed to be there for her. She’s all alone”, finally acknowledging Bonnie as the real MVP, which I suppose is all we can really hope for.
At this moment, Bonnie’s fate is still up in the air but according to executive producer Julie Plec, she will return to the present day. However, there is still no word on the actual episode, so we’ll all just have to wait and see. Hopefully Bonnie gets a break before the season finale, if not, maybe season seven.
The Vampire Diaries returns from its mid-season finale tomorrow January 22nd at 8|7c on the CW.
